Ergonomic Awareness for the Computer Worker -2 Hour Session
Designed to assist participants in recognizing and controlling the risks associated with the extended use of computers. The course will include the use of videos, exercises and activities to assist the participants with learning. By the end of the program participants will have the knowledge to implement a successful ergonomics program in their organization.

Infection Control

Be Pandemic Prepared: Protecting Our Community and Health Care Staff
 
After SARS and 9/11, health care organizations face greater challenges to prepare for emergencies.  An emergency management plan considers many aspects of an organization’s day-to-day operation. If similar to the Spanish flu of 1918-19, the next pandemic targets those between the ages of 20 to 40 years of age, employers could see an absentee rate of 35 percent or higher.  Staff may be ill themselves or be absent caring or grieving for loved ones. Based on OSACH Health and Safety in Emergency Management: A Guide for the Protection of Community and Health Care Staff this education session will explore those elements that employers should consider in pandemic planning for the protection of your most valuable resource - your staff.
Infection Control for Caregivers
Designed to provide participants with basic information about infection control. The course will include the use of videos, exercises and activities to assist the participants with learning. By the end of the day participants will have the knowledge of infection control standards and program needs. 

Violence Prevention

Developing a Workplace Violence Prevention Program
Implementing a Workplace Violence Prevention Program
Book 1 in the series will guide an organization's workplace violence program leader, and multidisciplinary committe, in the development of a prevention program that addresses all
forms of workplace violence with exception of client aggression. It suggests that, to ensure success, the committee should include representation from senior management, human resources, educators, and all staff levels, plus the JHSC and any unions.

Developing Crisis Prevention and Communication Strategies
Designed to provide the skills necessary to recognize and respond to the various stages of violence, Book 2 would be of most benefit to front-line staff and management. This session focuses on effective communication strategies and addresses issues such as how to support staff following violent incidents.

Developing Human Resource Strategies for Managing Workplace Violence
The title of Book 3 defines its target audience-human resource professionals. Senior management may also benefit from important topics such as the prevention of violence among employees, strategies for dealing with all forms of harassment, domestic violence, threats and weapons in the workplace. Book 3 also outlines hiring and termination best practices.

Preventing Client Aggression through Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA)©
Created by the Continuing Gerontological Education Cooperative, the Gentle Persuasive Approach is grounded in the principal of person-centred care for dementia patients. OSACH developed Book 4 as the program infrastructure to support the GPA curriculum. This program was designed to complement existing resident care strategies and systems. It integrates the MoHLTC Resident Care Standards, the College of Nurses of Ontarion standards and practice guidelines, and Ontario health and safet legislation. This program has been developed for the program lead and the multidisciplinary committee responsible for preventing client aggression. Staff who have received P.I.E.C.E.S and U-First! training may also benefit from this program.

WHMIS

Implementing a WHMIS Program
Designed to assist employers, managers and staff to develop safer working environment by enhancing their understanding of their individual roles and responsibilities and the practices and procedures needed to implement the Workplace Hazardous Information System (WHMIS) regulation. The course will include the use of videos, exercises and activities to assist the participants with learning. By the end of the day participants will have the knowledge to implement a successful WHMIS program in their organization.

Slips & Falls

Implementing a Slips and Falls Prevention Program
Participants will learn about the prevalence of slips and falls and become familiar with the relevant legislative requirements. They will learn how to conduct a slips and falls risk assessment and how to develop a prevention program. They will learn a number of control strategies.

Safe Driving

Drive Alive: Building a Safe Driving Program - half day
If employees are driving for work purposes, then a Safe Driving Program is needed. This training program will take you through the steps to develop that program including: establishing senior leadership commitment, reviewing legislative requirements and assessing the five main areas of risk, those being the driver, vehicle, environment, work practices, and materials/people being transported, developing controls, including a Safe Driving Policy, necessary procedures, reporting, inspection and investigation tools, etc., implementing the program, including the preparation of a marketing/communication strategy as well as a training and education component, and selecting indicators to evaluate the effectiveness of the program.

Respiratory

QLFT: Train the Fit Tester - Respiratory Protection Programs and Qualitative Train the Fit Tester (half day)
This half day in-service training session  (approximately 4 hours) will train participants on the requirements within a respiratory protection program, including the education, knowledge, and skills required to conduct their own qualitative fit testing (QLFT) as outlined in the CSA Standard Z94.4-02.  The maximum number of participants per session is 12. NOTE: Client must supply respirators.
QLFT: Qualitative Fit Testing and Education (full day or half day)
This service consists of two important components, the first - respirator use and care education for staff, and the second  - qualitative fit testing Education can be conducted either at the beginning of the fit testing session, to the entire group of participants, or prior to each fit test. If the former is chosen, approximately 18-20 QLFTs can be performed in a half day session (3-4 hours) or about 35-38 QLFTs in a full day session (7-8 hours). This is based on a constant flow of staff, 2 at-a-time every 30 minutes. NOTE: Client must supply respirators.
QLFT: Qualitative Fit Testing (without educational component) (full day or half day)
OSACH will perform qualitative fit testing without an educational program if an organization has, or is in the process of developing, a respiratory protection program. This program must include education for staff on respirator use and care. OSACH can perform approximately 20-24 QLFTs in a half day session (3.5 hours) or approximately 40-45 QLFTs in a full day session (7 hours). This is based on a constant flow of staff, 2 at-a-time every 15 minutes. NOTE: Client must supply respirators.
QNFT: Quantitative Fit Testing and Education (full day or half day)
This service consists of two important components: education in respirator use and care for staff, and quantitative fit testing. The education component is provided to the entire group of individuals being fit tested, prior to the commencement of the fit testing service. Approximately 9-10 QNFTs can be conducted in a half-day session (3.5 hours) and approximately 18-20 over a full day (7 hours). After the 30-minute educational session, one fit test will be performed approximately every 20 minutes. NOTE: Client must supply respirators.
QNFT: Quantitative Fit Testing (without educational component)
(full day or half day)
OSACH will perform quantitative fit testing without an educational program if an organization has, or is in the process of developing, a respiratory protection program. This program must include education for employees in the use and care of respirators. Approximately 10 QNFTs can be completed in a half-day session (3.5 hours) and approximately 20 over a full day (7 hours). One fit test will be performed approximately every 20 minutes. NOTE: Client must supply respirators.

Who should attend:
The Steering Committee overseeing the development and implementation of a minimal lift program and a comprehensive lift/transfer education program.

Training Objectives:
• To learn the six steps in planning a client-handling program
• How to conduct a program needs assessment
• How to develop a minimal/safe lifting policy
• How to develop comprehensive procedures to support the
   implementation of a client handling program
• How to implement a comprehensive lift/transfer education
   program.

This program can accommodate up to 30 participants and will be offered regionally with multiple organizations attending (open) or organizations can arrange for their own training session (closed).

The core group of staff (managers/supervisors and front line staff) who will be able to provide ongoing, continuity of training within their own organization. This training will complement the vendor's equipment-specific training that needs to be arranged by the organization.

One-Day Training Objectives:
• Assess clients for their mobility status to determine the most
   appropriate client-handling technique
• Perform and demonstrate a variety of transfer techniques
• Perform and demonstrate the use of various mechanical lifts
• Perform and demonstrate repositioning techniques

These sessions can accommodate 20 participants and are organization-specific (closed), taking into consideration the environment, clients and equipment. The sessions should be held with access to all types of equipment and actual work environments. Open sessions are available, however, specificity of the equipment and environment are not guaranteed.

This program can accommodate 20 people and will be organization-specific (closed), taking into consideration the environment, clients and equipment. The sessions should be held with access to all types of equipment and actual work environments. Each session will be four hours in duration. A total of 40 (2 groups of 20) front line caregivers can be trained for each consulting day. CBI will customize the training based on the organization's needs.

Designed to assist representatives of health care organizations in developing occupational health and safety programs that addresses specific health and safety issues and assessing their effectiveness. The course will include the use of videos, exercises and activities to assist the participants with learning. By the end of this training participants will have the knowledge to implement a successful health and safety program in their organization.
Roles and responsibilities in Occupational Health and Safety
Designed to assist workplace parties to better understand their roles and responsibilities in terms of occupational health and safety and promote the internal responsibility systems. The course will include the use of videos, exercises and activities to assist the participants with learning. By the end of the course participants will understand the Internal Responsibility System (IRS), due diligence, the legislative rights and responsibilities of workplace parties and how to maintain a safety culture.
Effective Joint Health and Safety Committees
Designed to provide members of the joint health and safety committee with the necessary information to operate effectively and address workplace health and safety issues with knowledge and confidence. The course will include the use of videos, exercises and activities to assist the participants with learning. By the end of the day participants will have the knowledge of their roles and responsibilities as committee members.
