Workplace violence prevention website resource page
Violence in the workplace is a serious and disturbing issue. In the health and community care sectors, statistics indicate workplace violence whether committed by persons who have no relationship to the organization, acts of aggression or violence by clients and staff, among co-workers, the result of personal relationships or based on criminal intent is an escalating problem. The health and community care sectors have the highest number of lost-time claims among all sector groups in the province. Seen in this light, it is even more troubling that workplace violence is often under-reported in the health and community care sectors.

Workplace Violence Prevention in
Health and Community Care
The Ontario health and community care sector currently has the highest provincial rate of lost-time injuries due to workplace violence. All too often incidents often go unreported and in some cases are even considered part of the job!
Violence is never an expectable risk – it’s time to step up efforts to minimize and, where possible, eliminate workplace violence.
This important new DVD, funded by the Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care, is the first educational video available on this topic for the healthcare sector. It encourages organizations and their employees to adopt the belief that violence is not part of the job.
The DVD defines workplace violence and provides examples of violence types that may be encountered in acute, long-term or community care sectors. Downloadable resources in the Prevention Tools section of the DVD enable organizations to conduct an effective risk assessment and empower individuals to implement control measures that will minimize the impact of workplace violence.
