Recommended Resources
These resources were developed outside the OSACH. They are presented
here through the courtesy of their originators, who have been kind
enough to share them with us.
We are impressed with the high quality of these

Risk Management Framework |
|
Why do we put so much effort into health
and safety? Because of risk.
Risk is a fact of existence; it can never
be totally eliminated, but generally the
more effort we put into controlling or
avoiding it, the less we are likely to
suffer from its consequences.
Workplaces inevitably include numerous
risks ranging from minor (e.g. paper
cuts) to serious (e.g. electrocution,
falls, exposure to infectious
agents). The larger and more
complex the workplace, the great the
number and variety of risks, and
therefore the more complicated the
problem of allotting the health and
safety resources at our disposal so as to
minimize the overall risk.
The principles of formal risk
management laid out in this document,
generously shared with OSACH by the
Ontario Ministry of Labour, can be used
to maximize the risk protection
attainable from the resources at hand.
This is a "must-read" for the
serious student of workplace health and
safety.

Back Injury Prevention Guide for Health
Care Workers |
|
This booklet is designed to provide
general guidance for employers and
employees about how to prevent back injury
as a result of lifting and moving patients
and residents. It may be useful in
settings such as hospitals, nursing homes,
assisted-living facilities, board and care
homes, and during the provision of home
health care.
The practical suggestions in this guide
are focused on orderlies, attendants,
nurses, nursing assistants and others who
actually lift and move patients and
residents. The information was developed
with the help of individuals and
institutions in the health care field who
have found effective ways to prevent back
injuries. 20030603
