Answers
  1. Where can I get Certification Training?

OSACH provides Basic Certification Training, as well as Workplace Specific Hazard Training tailored to the following types of organizations:

    • Long Term Care
    • Acute Care
    • Community Care
    • Group Home
    • Laboratory

To obtain detailed information about the Certification programs, use the Site Map or the menu on any page of this web site to navigate to Training > Certification > Overview; Schedule / Registration Form

If your needs are not met by the foregoing, ask the OSACH Consultant in your area for assistance in finding a suitable training provider.

  2. How do I do a hazard assessment?

The Workplace-Specific Hazard Training Needs Assessment identifies all the hazards in your workplace that may affect a worker's health and safety. Where appropriate, common hazards may be grouped(e.g.. chemical, biological hazards) for certified member training.

The training needs assessment can be accomplished by doing a workplace inspection(refer to Basic Certification program course materials) and consulting other source of information such as:

    • chemical inventories and MSDS's
    • WSIB reports add claims
    • accident injury or illness records for workplace and industry
    • committee meeting minutes and recommendations, inspection reports
    • sampling and/test data
    • Ministry of Labour orders/non-compliance
    • near miss reports
    • work flow or process flow information
    • general observations
    • contacting individuals within your workplace with knowledge or experience of the hazards

    Training Requirements:

Based on the identification of all the hazards in a workplace and determination of the level of concern for each, training on the significant hazards is required for completion of Workplace Specific Training for certified members in that workplace. A hazard is significant when, if not properly controlled, it has the potential to cause a lost time injury or occupational disease. This is determined by the employer, preferably in consultation with the JHSC. The other hazards should be considered for ongoing occupational health and safety training.

The Health and Safety Associations or other health and safety professionals may provide assistance in conducting the training needs assessment.

  4. Do I have to take a formal eight hour WHMIS program each year for annual review training?

No. The relevant legislation (Occupational Health & Safety Act, Part IV- Toxic Substances, Section 42, subsections (3) & (4) ) specifies that a review of the WHMIS training available at the facility and the employees' familiarity with it must take place at least annually. This does not mean that employees must necessarily be retrained every year, although it does require that employees' familiarity with WHMIS be determined and documented in some manner every year, e.g. with a questionnaire.

Retraining becomes a requirement only if the employees' familiarity with WHMIS is judged to be inadequate, or if some WHMIS-related change which has occurred within the facility which might affect the health and safety of workers.
